A character renovation

View 7.jpg

A one-bedroom character cottage in the City is reorganised and remade for a young couple.

The existing bathroom blocked the access to the year yard and made the kitchen feel cramped. The solution was to create a new bathroom/laundry/pantry ‘pod’ in the existing dining space and push the living space to the back to fully connect to the yard. A more efficiently-planned kitchen and living space meant the previous living room in the front of the house can be turned into a second bedroom/ study. The roof of the new addition pops up above the new pantry to allow northern light into the kitchen, and high-level windows provide cross ventilation, making the old cottage more energy-efficient via passive heating and cooling. The finishes are textural, eclectic and cool, just like the owners and the inner-city location.
